Ref 17: SITE SPECIFIC WORKSHOP - GOZO '05

As from Friday afternoon we set ourselves to explore and discover the whole place which had to be our workshop area for the next three days. From grass to sand, from rocks to sea, every inch, or so, of the landscape was explored. Elements are crucial when you are working in outdoor spaces and one has to learn turning these elements in his favour. Being November we kept in mind that it could possibly rain but all were determined that “come sun, come rain … we work!!”, well we were sparred the rainy bit which made things slightly easier.

Workshops during the day were carried out at the beach, yet there was no way we were going to spend any time lazying about. After dinner (which was quite late in the eve) all participants would join in creativity workshops. All sparred their remaining energy and efforts in trying their hand in shadow theatre puppetry and making lanterns with kite paper, cane sticks and candles … it was very interesting to see how creativity, practicality and safety found balance between them!!

Sunday was dedicated to put on two short performances by two different groups. The team leaders were Patrick Vella and Artus Chavez Novello who helped the participants put into practice what they learned during the past days. Results were satisfying considering the short preparation time. Everyone made sure to use the resources found around be it costumes, there and then made props or masks made from the natural clay found at the beach.

This was a good taster to learn what a performer must be aware of and how he can work in an open space environment. What we discovered during these three days was only the tip of the iceberg
